Story of an old helpless man
2020-08-15
I was doing my DM cardiology in AFMC pune , it's a military establishment with state of the art facilities, .. My schedule use to be extremely busy with cath lab, wards , opds and above all our academic classes which were real horrible. We use to be thoroughly grilled in these classes. Needless to say I still get nightmares of those gory days.
One afternoon I just happen to come to my residence in wanwadi near afmc just to collect my pendrive in which I had saved my presentation. There was rush in our colony.
As my mind was already puzzled with the seminar schuduled at 4 pm. I realized that in my colony there is an old man living alone with a caretaker who was a boy around 15 yr old.
That old man was vomiting blood since morning.
Colony person told me to have a look , I examined the pt. He was drowsy and was severly pale, pulse was feeble. He was in need of hospitalization badly.
I was in afmc where civilian could not be admitted. There was no body major to look after him in hospital.
Apart from that he had no money. I immediately rung my HOD col banerji about the pt . Without verifing hus civilian status he told me ..... Then admit . ( I realized how good Human being drs r when it comes to emergency )
I brought him with me and admitted in icu and started gastric lavage , iv fluid and ordered blood. At 4 pm I delivered a talk on cardiac cycle in seminar room.
Whole night pt was resuscitated , 4 unit of blood were already given.
Next day on morning rounds it was found out he was a civilian. There were no family members. No paperwork had been completed.
Who ll be answerable if he dies .... I was asked. I was a bit embrassed and nervous. I signed as his relative and he was kept on treatment.
He had a waxing and waning course. After 24 hrs in the afternoon , his caretaker 15 yr old boy pulled my shirt and asked ..
Babu ji bach tu jayenge. mere Inn ke bina koi nahi hai. Ma kai saal se Inn ke hi sath ho.
I took him to tea stall outside hospital. We started sipping tea . He offered me 5 rs note. I smiled and told him je juram hai.i reassured him.
Over next 3 to 4 days he was discharged but he needed nursing care.
As I was also going through financial crunch those days , he was my neighbor .
It became my daily routine along with my younger son to visit him morning and evening , he improved completely.
Few days later he came along with his caretaker to my house in wanwadi , and gave me a packet and told me mana mat karna. He left without saying anything.
I opened the packet there was a dugru seth parsad and some receit, he donated all his belonging s to the temple on my name.
He left wanwadi and could not be traced after that
